From the time of Zola and Baudelaire, critics have been the king makers in art and, after them, follow the collectors and the museums. Is there an objective standard of quality in art? How is the new explained? Curator Franklin Hill Perrell presents a three-part series that explores the role of critics, journalists, poets and others from the literary world, including Gertrude Stein on to Clement Greenberg who became linked with the careers of artists such as Manet, Monet, Lautrec, Picasso, Matisse, Gris, Miro, Pollock, De Kooning and others.

Fees: • The fee for individual lectures of this series is $20 members, $25 nonmembers.

Join us for an intimate evening with artist, Red Grooms as he discusses his art, his career, his life, with our own, Constance Schwartz in a relaxed, unceremonious atmosphere that will grant the audience unique access into an informal conversation. A very limited number of tickets will be sold to this once in a life time opportunity. In addition, audience members will have the chance to purchase signed exhibition posters depicting his famed piece, The Easter Parade.

Inspired by our new exhibition, which includes Red Grooms’ “art about art” installation juxtaposing the Cubists of Paris with the Abstract Expressionists of New York, Curator Franklin Hill Perrell discusses how The School of Paris — Matisse, Picasso, Gris and Légér — changed art forever and how The School of New York —Pollock, de Kooning and their successors — added their own twists, their own ways to bring new, unprecedented techniques to painting and sculpture.

Details: One of the museum’s most popular offerings, Private Tea & Tour of the Exhibition offers a behind the scenes glimpse at our exhibitions. Each event, at 2:30 pm on Wednesdays, is introduced by the museum’s director, Constance Schwartz, and features a private guided tour of the current exhibition, Red Grooms: Ruckus in Roslyn, followed by a menu of tea, sandwiches, scones and sweets in the Museum Café. Space is limited; reserve early.

The Creative Edge With Shirley Romaine

Details: Shirley Romaine, the host of TV’s Artscene on Long Island, presents a program of rare interviews with visual and performing artists from the archives of her award-winning cable television shows. She uses these interviews with luminaries such as Louise Nevelson, Richie Havens, Morton Gould, Andrea Marcovicci and Isabella Rossellini to explore the creative process. This multimedia program includes video, live commentary and a question and answer period.

Details: The families of the Town of Hempstead are cordially invited to attend a series of fun, activity filled afternoons that celebrate our current exhibition, Red Grooms: Ruckus in Roslyn, and the lovely communities that are within the town. Each Sunday we’ll be spotlighting a particular town in the Town of Hempstead — its residents, legislators and businesses. These residents will be admitted to the museum for free on their designated Sundays according to the list below.
